Measures and analyzes 4 parameters simultaneously.

POGO measures ALL 4 of the most influential variables governing turf performance. It’s the interaction of these 4 parameters which gives the accuracy of POGO’s prescriptions. For instance, low moisture content doesn’t necessarily mean water should be applied.

Unique technology.

The sensor is based on a unique technology called “Coaxial Impedance Dielectric Reflectometry“, which ensures the absolute moisture reading is accurate at salinity level, and in any soil without needing to calibrate it for each soil mix on every green.

The predominant moisture and salinity exchange within the rootzone of all types of turf systems occurs in the top 2”to 2.5”* (5.5cm to 6cm). The short tines measure only this depth, which maximizes precision.

Is "good enough" good enough for your property?

Historically, soil sensors based on TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) sensor technology have been popular for measuring soil moisture, primarily because they are inexpensive and the accuracy is “good enough”. However, the accuracy of their moisture measurements is greatly influenced by temperature, soil composition and especially EC (electrical conductivity).

TDR sensors commonly state their moisture accuracy only below a certain level of electrical conductivity. Even then, the moisture accuracy spec is assuming calibration for that specific soil composition (which can vary greatly from green to green, and even within a green).

The problem with TDR probes

Calibrating a TDR probe for each location where it’s used is not practical, so virtually no one using them (for measuring turf conditions) does it. This means one is making decisions about watering, fertilizing or cultural practices based on measurements that may be quite different than actual values.

Several peer-reviewed scientific papers have been written about the effects of salinity on TDR sensors and their accuracy at measuring across different soils.

A recent USGA Research Update stated that “when using TDR sensors at different salinity levels, the sensors need separate calibration if the absolute soil moisture value is of interest.”

In the Soil Science Society of America Journal (2013), Benor, Michael & Levy, Guy & Mishael, Yael & Nadler, Arie. wrote “users of the TDR 300 are advised to expect increasingly severe deviations in VWC (volumetric water content) from true values for clayey, saline, and wet soils having wide variations in temperature”.

In Soil Survey Horizons (2004), Caverzasi, M.T. & Brevik, Eric & L. Grable, Judith concluded that “the strength of the relationship between TDR values and soil water content can vary considerably from one soil to the next” and added that a TDR sensor “may not be appropriate for use in these soils if a high degree of water content accuracy is essential”.

Measures the right depth.
Based on science.

Regardless of rootzone material or depth, root depth or turf type, more than 85% of all moisture and salinity activity occurs in the bulk upper 5.5cm to 6cm (2″ to 2.5″).

Measuring beyond this depth dilutes the measurement with values that don’t represent the zone of predominant activity. Measuring less than this depth misses the full story. 

Measuring only this depth maximizes precision.
